It is an honor to announce that Kristin Piraneo has been selected as the Emma Hart Willard School’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year! Kristin has 24 years of experience in education. She began her career working for the New Haven Public Schools, first as a classroom teacher and then as a Literacy Coach, prior to joining the Willard Staff as a Literacy Specialist six years ago. During her time here, Kristin has established herself as a highly respected, dedicated, collaborative, and passionate educator who continuously works to grow her practice in service of student achievement. She is a consummate professional and is always willing to share her knowledge and support others. As one colleague wrote, “Kristin is a huge asset to our school community. She also has the biggest heart and genuinely cares about the school, students, and staff.” 

Kristin is an advocate for all students and is committed to their success. She understands the importance of relationships and provides students with wonderful educational experiences. She works collaboratively to develop the best programming for each child. A colleague wrote, “The rapport she establishes with each student creates a safe space for learning so students feel comfortable, even when the work they do is challenging.” Another colleague wrote that Kristin “not only supports our struggling readers but supports the student as a whole…Kristin meets them where they are so students feel comfortable taking academic risks.”

Kristin is dedicated to supporting all staff, continuously sharing her enthusiasm, time, and knowledge with others. She recognizes the exponential impact this will have on student success. Another colleague wrote, “her constant support, feedback, guidance, and patience have allowed me to learn more approaches to teaching students at a variety of levels. She went on to say, “her dedication to students, teachers, and the community of learning at Willard has been inspiring.” 

Kristin received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fairfield University, a Master of Science Degree in Elementary Education (K-6), and a Sixth Year in Remedial Reading in Language Arts (K-12) and Reading and Language Arts Consultant Certification from Southern Connecticut State University. 

Kristin has dedicated her time and talents to presenting many professional development sessions for staff district-wide including, Teaching Tools for Differentiation, Rigor, and Independence (K-5), Breathing New Life Into Book Clubs: Lighting the Fire of Discussion (3-6), New Teacher Workshops, The Power of Words, and Making Grammar Work. She has also attended numerous professional development workshops over the years including, Blevins’ Masterclass, Mindfulness Fundamentals, and Shifting the Balance Online Course. Kristin is also trained in Wilson and the Sonday System. She was part of a team that was awarded the CRA Award for their project, Developing Compassion and Empathy with Fifth Grade Readers.

Kristin has been a member of many district committees including Equity Advocates, Berlin Phonics Task Force, and the District Literacy Vertical Team. She serves as an integral member of Willard School’s SAT/SRBI Team, Leadership Team, Crisis Team, Safe School Climate and Security Committee, and the Social Committee. She is a trained TEAM mentor, presents at the K Welcome, and has participated in summer curriculum writing. Kristin also works collaboratively with the Willard PTO on events such as Literacy Family Nights, the Read-a-Thon, and the Summer Reading Kick-off.

Congratulations to Kristin for being awarded this special honor! The Willard staff applauds and celebrates her daily commitment to the students, colleagues, and the school community. We are proud to have her represent us as our 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year!
