The Berlin Public Schools Fine Arts Department is committed to fostering a community of creative, innovative, and passionate learners who appreciate cultural diversity in a global society, through the arts. All learners will be provided with meaningful opportunities in the arts to further develop a deeper form of self-expression, empowering them to become lifelong participants, appreciators, and advocates of the fine arts.
The elementary visual arts curriculum helps students understand how media, technique, and process are used to create works of art; how artworks are structured; how art has a variety of functions; how to identify, analyze and select subject matter, symbols and ideas for personal/cultural expression; how historical and cultural contexts provide meaning for works of art, and how to assess the merits of their own artworks and the artworks of others.
The art class focuses on exposure to a variety of art media, and lessons that encompass the wide range of National and Connecticut State Standards for Art Education. Students will participate in arts learning that combines multiple disciplines, cross-curricular connections, and personal creativity.
